Amelia Briggs is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her soft sculptures and images examine themes of interiority, memory, and transformation through plump, whimsical forms that switch between the familiar and the uncanny. Working with fiber, reclaimed materials, fabric, panel, glass, latex, and gouache, Briggs reinterprets fragments of memory and childhood objects, shaping them into sinuous forms that suggest botanical growth, bodily organs, and imagined ecosystems. Through processes of sewing, cutting, stuffing, layering, and assembling, materials become vessels for embodied experience, in which personal history is absorbed and transformed. Briggs received her BFA in painting from the Herron School of Art and Design through Indiana University and her MFA in visual studies from the University of Memphis. In 2022, Briggs received a grant from the Tyson Family Foundation and CACHE for her solo exhibition, “Pony Gate”, where she transformed an abandoned storefront into a large-scale public installation. She has been an artist-in-residence at Wassaic Project, Monson Arts, and the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. In 2019, Briggs began a collaboration with renowned designer Kelly Wearstler, which continues today. This partnership has been featured in Vogue, Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Surface, and Domino. Briggs has exhibited work with The Hole (Los Angeles, CA), Art Basel (Miami, FL), Numeroventi (Florence, Italy), Boston University (Boston, MA), Bowes-Parris Gallery (London, UK), Cohle Gallery (Paris, France), The High Line (New York, NY), Platform (New York, NY), Exhibition A (New York, NY), Future Fair (New York, NY), and Barely Fair (Chicago, IL), among others. Her work has been featured in publications such as The Observer, Architectural Digest, Hyperallergic, Boston Art Review, Effect Magazine, Artforum, Contemporary Art Review LA, NPR, ArtMaze Magazine, New American Paintings, Maake Magazine, Create Magazine, and Burnaway, among others. From 2017 to 2021, Briggs worked as the Director of David Lusk Gallery, where she curated numerous exhibitions. She has also curated for SECAC and SPRING/BREAK Art Show.
